TIME FOR A TRIP AROUND THE COUNTY OF DEVON
The M5 in Devon seems a good place to start our road trip this year.
Leave the M5 at Junction 28, and go through Cullompton Town Centre. Follow the A3181, Exeter Road south, parallel to the M5. Find The Antique Village on the righthand side at Hele. Good café here. Retrace your steps to M5 at Cullompton, and join M5 southbound to Junction 29. Leave M5 onto A30 eastbound, and take second exit, signed Exeter Airport. Turn left in the airport complex onto Long Lane. Carradale Farm Antiques are in the next complex of buildings, about half a mile on the left. Return to A30, and head eastbound to Honiton. Leave at first exit for Honiton, and into Honiton High Street. Fountain Antiques are immediately on your right hand side after the traffic lights at the top of the hill. On-street parking here.
Next stop Beer! Take A375 south from Honiton, and at the top of the hill find The Hare & Hounds pub on your right at Putts Corner. Turn left here onto Seaton Road. Follow this through interesting countryside until you reach A3052. Again turn left, and soon find Beer signposted on your right – B3174. Dolphin Antiques are at The Dolphin Hotel.
Go back to A3052 and head west to Sidmouth. Turn left at the traffic likes in Sidford towards the town centre, to find Sidmouth Antique Centre in All Saints Road, and Ships & Sealing Wax in The High Street. Return to A3052 and head west to Clyst St Mary. Take first exit onto Exmouth Road, then at The George and Dragon pub, turn right into Topsham Road. Follow through into Topsham, and Topsham Quay Antiques Centre are on the quay. Lovely views here overlooking the River Exe. Now drive into Exeter, along A3051 Topsham Road. In the City, turn left into Western Way, and soon left again after the ancient City walls, into Lower Coombe Street and Quay Hill, which leads to Exeter Quay, and Exeter’s Antiques Centre and Riverside Cafe. This was the quay which featured in the 1960’s TV epic “The Onedin Line”. Take Commercial Road back to Western Way, crossing the River Exe onto Alphington Street. Turn left into Marsh Barton Road, and right at the end into Marsh Green Road, finding The Trading Hub at the end on the right. Another good café here.
Rejoin the M5 southbound, onto A38 and then A380 to Newton Abbott. Leave at exit for Newton Abbott Racecourse and the fairs are well signed. Then take A383 Ashburton Road to The Devon Expressway at Caton. Turn left onto A38, and then first exit for Ashburton. East Street Antiques will be found on the left, then turn right into North Street where In a Nutshell are on the left. Make a point of checking the Ashburton Antiques Trail on Page 55.
Rejoin the Devon Expressway towards Plymouth, leave at next junction onto A384 to Totnes. Then take A381 through Hallwell to Torr Quarry and M&H Antiques & Art. Continue on A381 towards Kingsbridge forking left to Ledstone then into Belle Hill. This leads to Kingsbridge Antiques Centre in Church Street. Parking nearby on The Quay.
Now we are off to West Devon! Head north to A38 Devon Expressway, then west to Plymouth. Turn north on A386 to Tavistock. Tuesday is the best day, as the huge Tavistock Pannier Market hosts the weekly Antiques & Collectables Market. Nearby in Brook Street find Yesterday’s Antiques & Collectables. Next stop North Devon, via the exquisitely named Umberleigh!
Follow A386 north to A30, then east to Okehampton. Leave A30 and head for Winkleigh, High Bickington, and then join A377 into Umberleigh. At The Bridge, Umberleigh, find Murches Antique Emporium. Four times a year Umberleigh Antiques Fair is held in nearby Umberleigh village hall. Then take B3227 to South Molton. At West Street turn right into Barnstaple Street and then Broad Street. Find South Molton Pannier Market on the right, with markets every Thursday and Saturday. Almost opposite is Atlas, a great shop for inspired interior design ideas.
Our last stop is Lynton on the North Devon coast. Head north on A3226 to A361 North Devon Linkroad. Go straight over onto A399, through Brayford to Blackmoor Gate, where you join the A39 past Lynton and Barnstaple Railway centre, and on to Lynton. There you will find Antiques and More in Queen Street, Lynton.
